Broadway Baby

The first musical I ever saw was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was the original Broadway cast with Donny Osmond and the traveling show came to Salt Lake the year I turned seven years old.
I was obsessed.
After that I listened to the soundtrack every day for about a year. My idols were the stars from Broadway Kids. By then my parents decided to take me to another Broadway show. At this point I was already in singing and dancing lessons and was pretty much set on the idea that I would grow up to be a performer.
In junior high I became a drama kid and danced in all the musicals. I had given up on the vocals because my voice was clearly better left for singing in the shower than on a stage.
I visited New York the summer before I started high school to take dance lessons at Broadway Dance Center and Steps. That's when I saw my first Broadway show in the city. After that trip I always had a feeling that I would return to NY.
The reason I am telling you all this is so you understand that when I say I love musicals, I mean I LOVE musicals!!
Living in Utah we were able to see a few of the traveling Broadway shows. And occasionally when I went to other states I  would see one. But when I moved to New York that was the first thing I had on my mind and it has become my goal to see as many shows as I can possibly afford.
I have now lived in New York for 6 months and in that time I have seen 5 Broadway shows.

What have I seen??
  • Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
  • Les Miserables
  • Annie
  • Wicked ( 4 times )
  • Chicago
  • Billy Elliot
  • The Lion King ( 2 times )
  • Phantom Of The Opera
  • Mamma Mia
  • The Book Of Mormon
  • Mary Poppins
  • and most recently, Newsies
When Jaxon was in town I took him to see his first ever Broadway show. He was very skeptical at first. He said he didn't like the idea of a story being sung. But it only took about 3 seconds for him to warm up to the idea once the show started. Newsies was a wonderful first show for him. I give it 5 stars.
I must admit that Wicked is still my favorite of all the shows. But I have yet to see one I didn't absolutely love.

The main reason I even thought of this post was because I am practically on the edge of my seat waiting for Les Miserable (the movie) to come out on Christmas day. The cast is amazing. I can't wait. In case you skipped over the trailer before reading this, you really should watch it. It gives me chills. I was completely obsessed with Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia and I'm sure she will be fantastic in this as well.

What do you think? Are you excited for the film? Any other musical lovers out there? What shows have you seen that I should go to?
